This book offers the first extended translation of the Chūyūki diary (a medieval Japanese text) into English, along with eight short essays explaining cultural practices such as poetry and musical performance, the court calendar, gift giving, seating, and modes of transport. Seven chapters contributed by historians, literary scholars, and art historians shed light on its author, Munetada, and twelfth-century journal writing, the political climate, childbirth and wet nursing, courtier clothing and diet, and funerary traditions.

The book centers on a text dating from the early 1100s, and the face and typographical style were chosen accordingly. Adobe Jenson Pro, an old style serif typeface based on an early Venetian face from 1470 was selected as it is an organic face, which hints at the classical Japanese practice of writing with a brush in cursive forms. It is also considered a highly readable typeface, a must for a textbook.
